Today was a special day for us. We received the call to take in a 7 month year old baby girl and of course we said yes.
I could not concentrate after the news came in, but I did my best to wrap up a work deadline before escaping early to greet our new little one. I ran around the house for like an hour before she arrived, cleaning and packing. We had set plans to visit my family in NH the next day for a long weekend, and now we were looking into if she could come along with us.
It was a rainy, cool day when she pulled up. The DCF worker brought her in all tucked into her car seat. She was fast asleep in a cute white cozy sweater and adorable white fuzzy hat to boot.
I chatted a bit with him and showed him her room, so they too knew she was in good hands before he departed. Then I just stood and stared at her in silence. She was the cutest little peanut, with a light chocolate, velvety skin that was so beautiful. She looked content, which was all that mattered in the moment.
Kevin soon returned home, so I let him know to be quiet as she was still asleep and we had a few things to do before we heading out on our first outing to Target to get her some new clothes and of course a toy and stuffed animal to occupy her too.
When she woke, she looked around a little, but was pretty good natured, especially knowing she was with two brand new people she never met before. Scary to a little one in most cases, but not her though.
We picked her up and spent some time with her, before tucking her into our own car seat for our local errands. We knew it was going to be a later night, and were unsure how she would take to the excursion, but we defintely needed to grab a few things especially if we were taking her with us for the family weekend.
She seemed to enjoy her first Target store outing and was so quiet. Really we were amazed how good a baby she was so far. We picked up some things, more than of course we planned, and checked ourselves out.
We made one last stop to pickup some Chinese food takeout as there was no way I was cooking tonight and we knew, although hungry already, it would be a late dinner for the two of us.
We arrived home, unpacked, and started to get her settled in for the night. They tell you to not take off her clothes or bath her on the first night as it is a piece of home and comforting for them. So we just went upstairs, changed her into a fresh diaper, and placed her in the crib. She was a bit fussy, but eventually fell asleep.
Dinner was cold, so we quickly heated our takeout up and wolfed it down. We were so hungry yet so tired from the day... but oh so happy.
Stay tuned for more as we get used to being new foster parents to this sweet girl.
